The Canary Islands consist of seven larger and six smaller islands and are situated more than a thousand kilometres south of the Iberian peninsula and only 115 kilometres from the nearest point of the African coast.
In Ancient Greece they were known as the Fortunate Isles.
The best known of the islands are Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Each island has an individual identity and they are very geographically diverse.
Recently the Canary Islands were granted a regional constitution by Spain and special status by the European Union.
The islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are well served by the UK’s major southern airports, with flight times of around 4 ½ hours. |
